Our finding that caregiving fathers had lower T than fathers who did not invest in care supports the hypothesis that father-child interaction likely contributes to suppressed paternal T among fathers. After becoming partnered fathers, these men experienced dramatic reductions in both waking and evening T, which were substantially greater than the age-related declines observed in single nonfathers. The large reductions in circulating T among the new fathers in our sample provide a strong rationale to investigate linkages between fatherhood status and risk for diseases related to T exposure. Relevant findings from other mammals are less consistent, with fathers having lower T in some (42–45) but not all (46–48) mammalian species in which fathers assist with offspring care. Our results are consistent with findings from many bird species, among which fathers often show declines in T during periods in which they help raise young (6, 41). One could speculate that, for women, individual differences in other hormones such as estrogens or oxytocin may be more relevant in biopsychosocial models of their abuse risk but such speculations await further study. Time points (T1, T2, T3, T4) in first column refer to measures of abuse risk (CAPI, AAPI-2, ReACCT in columns) at those time points Fathers’ self-reported dispositional empathy was not significantly related to their testosterone levels (in which only the association with T4 IRI scores were in the expected direction). Because controlling for age or SES would imply testosterone would need to account for incremental variance (which was not the intent of this study), neither was considered a covariate. For two-parent families, the order of which parent engaged the infant in the parent-child interaction first was counterbalanced. During free play, parents and infants were seated on a blanket on the floor; parents were instructed to play with their infant as they normally would but using only the standard set of provided age-appropriate toys while completing a brief form about their infant, which competed for their attention. During the task, parents hear and see a ticking clock of how late they are to induce time urgency. In prior research conducted in two neighboring cultural groups in Tanzania, fathers in the population in which paternal care is the cultural norm had lower T, whereas this was not found among fathers in the group in which paternal care is absent (20). Together, these findings provide longitudinal support for the hypothesis that interacting with a dependent child suppresses T (20, 22, 24). Once these men entered stable partnerships and became new fathers, they subsequently experienced a large decline in T, which was greater than the comparably modest declines seen in single nonfathers during the same period. Partnered fathers are included for visual comparison but were not part of the regression analyses. (B) Between-group changes in AM and PM T values between 2005 and 2009 based on partnering and parenting status. We next tested whether men who became newly partnered new fathers during the period of follow-up experienced a greater decline in T relative to men who remained single nonfathers between baseline and follow-up. Consistent with the results presented below, a greater proportion of partnered men and fathers had T below the median. As before, there may be important gender differences in how mothers and fathers respond to the moderating influences described in hypotheses two and three. When couples have a positive marital relationship they report nearly one half of a standard deviation higher quality relationship with their child. Spillover occurs between family subsystems when the mood, affect, or behavior from one family grouping is transferred to another (Almeida et al., 1999), such as when a mother fights with her husband and then withdraws from both him and her child. One of the primary mechanisms through which experiences in one of these family subsystems may influence the parent-child dyad is through a process of stress contagion called spillover (Bolger et al., 1989; White, 1999). Next, three saliva samples were obtained from parents and children, once during the home interview collected for training purposes, and two more upon arising on two mornings following the interview. The authors suggest that when parents have a conflictual relationship they are unable to provide the nurturing and warmth necessary to maintain a strong parent-child bond, and so the parent-child relationship suffers. Using data from 352 predominantly white working and middle class families, we find no direct link between mother’s and father’s testosterone and parent-child closeness. Testosterone in the Context of Endocrine Disorders As men age, their bodies go through various changes, including a decline in testosterone levels.... Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress management can also positively impact testosterone levels and overall well-being. This may hinder a man’s ability to form emotional connections with his children and engage in nurturing behaviors. Testosterone Levels depend on a wide variety of factors, such as age, activity level, diet, and lifestyle. Unfortunately, our data do not allow us to identify long-term patterns in hormone levels. Younger families are less stable (more likely to separate or divorce), have many more demands to cope with (infant and child care), and possess fewer resources (e.g. income and savings). These emotional attributes may make high testosterone women feel less capable in their motherly role and more vulnerable to outside influences—such as spillover—compared to low testosterone women. Youth Report of Father-Child Closeness as a Moderator of the Mother Testosterone - Mother-Child Closeness Linkages Our findings suggest that human males have an evolved neuroendocrine architecture that is responsive to committed parenting, supporting a role of men as direct caregivers during hominin evolution (13, 14, 21). Finally, fathers who were most involved in childcare had lower T compared with fathers who did not participate in care. Among the men in our sample who were single nonfathers as young adults, those with higher waking T were more likely to have become a partnered father by the time of follow-up. 2009 AM and PM T values among fathers varying in daily physical childcare. However, to date, no human study has monitored hormonal changes longitudinally as single nonfathers transition into stable partnerships and become fathers. Although these cross-sectional correlations are generally consistent with the presumed suppressive effect of partnering and fatherhood on T production (a "state" effect), such findings could alternatively result if men with low T are more likely to become partnered or fathers (a "trait" effect) (25). In a meta-analysis of 68 studies that examine the link between the marital dyad and parent-child relationships, Erel and Burman (1995) found that the quality of the marital relationship directly influenced the quality of the parent-child relationship. Because of overlapping and reciprocal ties between family members, the literature in this area suggests that the quality of a parent and child’s relationship cannot be understood independent of the quality of other family bonds (Fincham, 1998). On the one hand, studies have shown that the positive association between adolescent testosterone and externalizing behavior is moderated by the quality of parent-adolescent relationship, but more so for boys than girls (Booth et al., 2003). Remember, maintaining a holistic approach to parenting and overall well-being is crucial for fostering healthy parent-child relationships. If you suspect that your testosterone levels may be affecting your parenting abilities, it is advisable to seek guidance from a healthcare professional specializing in men’s health and TRT.
